The top Tucson employers include the University of Arizona, Raytheon Missle Systems, Davis-Monthan Air Force Base, Tucson Unified School District, Wal-Mart Stores, Inc., Phelps Dodge Mining Company, America Online, Bombardier Aerospace, Honeywell, Carondelet Health Network, and the University Medical Center. Some of the employers who have recently relocated to the Tucson area include: American Communications Services, Inc., GW Plastics-Tucson, King Energy Services, Leoni Cable Assemblies, Polymer Chemistry Innovations, EDS Call Center, Hickory Travel Systems Reservation Center, Krebs Engineers, SATCON Technology Corp., Containers Southwest, Intuit, Cross Country Group, and Opinion Research Corp.
Tucson has aggressively pursued economic development. One way to encourage economic expansion is through implementation of an
economic cluster strategy. Tucson has become a leader and a model in this area. The Aerospace Cluster is Tucson's largest, employing over 20,000 people. This cluster represents defense and space-related manufacturing, research and development, industrial high-tech fields, assembly, distribution and warehousing. The cluster also encompasses firms that maintain and rehabilitate the nation's commercial aircraft fleet.
